Proposed Stables Residential Development
Brief History
In 2003 Ipswich City Council proposed a stables residential development for an area of about 160 ha adjoining Marburg town on the east, south and west. Several public meetings were held, Council agreed that their proposal was flawed, other priorities overtook the proposal and it was put aside for the time being. The area involved was subsequently zoned ‘Stables Residential Investigation Zone’. (See Part 9, Division 7 (pp 9.37 to 9.48) of the Ipswich Planning Scheme <<http://pdonline.ipswich.qld.gov.au/pdonline/user/scheme/scheme/Part%209%20-%20Township%20Areas/Township%20Areas%20Pages%201-38.pdf>> and <<http://pdonline.ipswich.qld.gov.au/pdonline/user/scheme/scheme/Part%209%20-%20Township%20Areas/Township%20Areas%20Pages%2039-75.pdf>>)
Recent Action
Council has recently revisited the proposal. Separate meetings were held with representatives of the Marburg and District Residents’ Association, Marburg Show Society and Marburg Pacing Association on 2 July to identify the issues involved. Most of the issues raised by the Residents’ Association are listed on the attached ‘Horse Issues’ paper.
Council officers then met with the combined representatives of the three organisations on 16 July to report on these meetings and to discuss the proposal further. The issues identified are summarised on the attached ‘Summary of Outcomes’.
What next?
The shallow, saline and probably biologically unsafe watertable underlying Marburg town has been recognised as a significant issue for the town. Councillor Pahlke is convening a meeting of people with expertise in this area to discuss the extent of the problem and how it might be addressed.
Council’s strategic planning staff will continue to examine issues raised in the discussions, including that of the watertable, and will convene another meeting in ‘a couple of months time’.
Discussions are also taking place regarding managing horses on small properties, including horses in residential areas. A workshop on managing horses on small properties is being planned.
